Overview
A family wanted their parents nearby as they aged, but not under the same roof — everyone needed their own front door. We designed and built a detached ADU behind the main house: a complete, single-level home with its own kitchen, bath, and covered entry, connected to the main house by a short garden path.
The challenge
The lot's setback and tree-protection requirements limited where a detached structure could sit, and the grandparents needed single-level, no-step living throughout. Utility runs to a freestanding structure also meant coordinating a new service line without disrupting the main house.
Our solution
We sited the DADU to preserve the property's mature trees and oriented it to catch afternoon light on a small private patio. Wide doorways, a curbless shower, and lever hardware throughout mean the space works today and will keep working as mobility needs change — independence with dignity, a few steps from family.
My parents have their own home again — not a room in ours. They have people close by, and everyone still has their own space.
